Does your company talk to their customers? Probably. A better question to ask is: does your company engage your customers? Probably not. In today’s world people are spending more and more time on social media. According to a study done by Pew Research Center, a majority of Americans now say they get news via social media. It is interesting to see that before Facebook broke into the social media market, many users would spend their time on the internet crawling for information. In today’s day in age, people expect that any content that they deem relevant should be delivered to them through social channels. So what gives? What can companies do today to improve their social media engagement with their followers?

1. ENGAGING YOUR CUSTOMERS IN CONVERSATION

With social platforms becoming the forefront of digital media distribution, it is important for businesses to maintain their presence. More importantly though, it’s important for businesses to actually engage with their customers. It’s really easy to post content or share articles that the staff may think is relevant, but the big tell of what’s relevant is what your followers think is relevant.

Ask your followers questions! Take for example a company that sells vitamin supplements and nutritional items. How do your followers take their supplements? What recipes do they use? This will show other followers that you are engaged in the lifestyle, and will encourage the followers you speak with to reference you as a reliable source of both products and information. Be sure to avoid “salesy” communication; the goal is for followers to see your company as part of the ecosystem rather than simply focused on taking their money.

2. SHOW ME A…VISUAL!

Let’s not forget that the most important part of any social post is a clear, compelling visual medium. Infographics and relevant images sell the content to a customer. It’s no surprise that a customer who is in the beginning stages of the buying/engagement process want’s to see what their money will get them. Customers who see what the actual product will look like when it arrives to them, will feel more confident in the purchase and less likely to return. Not to mention, retention of information is higher when there is a correlating image associated to the text. (Source)

3. REWARD ENGAGEMENT

We all have those followers who are really active and love our product, what a better way to thank them then by sharing the love? Reward those who provide great content. Remember, people who take the time to share with your their experiences (positive or negative) deserve your response. If your follower goes out of their way to share the love, you should do the same! Thank them personally for doing what they did.

If they sent you a complaint/concern, answer and be transparent. Consumers hate nothing more than being led down a path of vagueness and not getting a response to their complaint.

WHAT SHOULD I FOCUS ON RIGHT NOW?

Take a look at your followers and those with who you interact with online, make sure you are providing them with a simple engagement option. Send a shoutout to followers who have recently bought from your or those who just left you a review. Most importantly though, thank your customers for buying from you. Let them know you care about their business.
